Pastors - Is it time to dig deeper?

Fellow pastors in the RMD, is it time to assist your lay leaders to refresh their grasp of basic Lutheran teachings at a deeper level?

All of us have to work to maintain a Christ-centered, Gospel-breathing spirit in our congregations.  And many of our mission prospects, new members, and even teachers in Sunday School and Bible classes may not be aware of  major teachings in Lutheran theology.  Some come from denominations that don’t teach about the need to distinguish Law and Gospel, who emphasize the sacraments as “ordinances to be obeyed” rather than God’s instruments to forgive sin, or who focus on Christian conduct and may overlook the forgiving Gospel as the power for Christian growth in all of life.

Brothers, if we ourselves have to keep working to keep the necessary balance in these things, it follows that our lay leaders may also need to go deeper into the teachings.

Would you consider sending some of your elders, Sunday School and Bible class teachers, chair-people in evangelism, stewardship, and community service to a course in “Christian Doctrine I”?

That course will be offered by the Rocky Mountain Theological Institute (RMTI), beginning on February 4, 2012, and meeting on alternate Saturdays through April 14.  Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (with a one-hour lunch break) at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, located at Constitution and Murray in Colorado Springs.

The course is meant to be intensive and challenging, in order to bring real benefit to the students. The tuition fee is $150 to study for credit, or $100 to sit in as an auditor.

Please contact the RMTI Coordinator (who is also the instructor for this course) for more details, including a syllabus showing topics, textbooks, and assignments for the study.

 Rev. David Schneider – RMTI Coordinator.  (719) 596- 6703  or  djschnitz@juno.com

One Day Seminar for Mature Adults

Sponsored by the Rocky Mountain District Older Adult Ministry Committee

THEME: “Expanding One’s Quality of Life”

A one-day seminar sponsored by the Older Adult Ministry Committee of the District will again be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2100 Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, CO on Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Last year 98 seniors attended and many favorable comments were made about the program, stating that the topics of the presenters were extremely interesting and educational. The four presenters and topics for this year are:

PAIN MANAGEMENT: Alan R. Brewer, MD, with Spinal Diagnostics and Pain Management, will speak about relief for chronic pain. He specializes in the use of low level laser therapy.  The laser device produces a beam of light which is applied over the injured area to stimulate healing. When laser light is absorbed by living tissue, it triggers biological reactions in the cells. Chemical substances are produced, released, and
transported by the blood and lymph to other parts of the body. In this way the effects of the laser light may not be only local but can also achieve wide systematic physiological responses. Low level laser therapy has been used for many years on sports injuries,
arthritic joints, neuropathic pain syndromes, and back and neck pain.

MIRACULOUS EVENTS ON THE DAY OF THE CRUCIFIXION: Robert Werth, professional electrical engineer currently at Ball Aerospace, will speak on the miraculous events of the day of the crucifixion. On that day numerous prophecies were fulfilled. Some of these took place before Jesus was nailed, some took place while He was on the cross, and then some took place in the evening after His death. Recent discoveries in
astronomy coupled with ancient prophecies come together to show us how we worship a God who is beyond space and time, who is real, and who loves us enough to sacrifice His own Son so that through faith in Him we may have eternal life with God.

INSIGHTS INTO THE MUSLIM WORLD:  Rev. Dr. George Naeem, Executive
Director of Biblical Orthodox Lutheran Mission (BOLM) Society, is a native of Egypt.  There he served as a physician and surgeon for many years; he experienced firsthand the oppression of a Muslim majority. In 1994 he came to the US to study at San Francisco Theological Seminary, where he received a Doctor of Ministry degree.  He has since
become an LCMS pastor through the colloquy process. BOLM is one of the missions of the LCMS. It was founded three years ago and offers an internet seminary to those who are converting to Christianity from other religions, most often, those of the Muslim
religion.  The central purpose of the mission is to bring Jesus Christ to the Muslim world, spreading the Gospel through radio messages, BOLM internet, lectures, and mailings.

WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING FOR – ELEANOR ROOSEVELT DURING WW II:  Susan Marie Frontczak, who lives in Boulder, portrays Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 as she has just returned from England where she visited with soldiers, generals,
royalty, and the working people. Find out how the First Lady felt about the individual’s role in a world torn by war, hardship, and uncertainty.  The program consists of a
monologue in-character, followed by a question and answer period first with “Mrs.
Roosevelt” and then with the scholar/presenter.

GRACE PLACE in the ROCKIES for LCMS Singles:

The stresses of ministry are great to all; we're in the "people business" and it is especially challenging when you are a LCMS church worker who is single by choice or circumstance. We want to invite you as a single church worker to attend a health and wholeness retreat particularly and innovatively designed just for you, addressing the types of concerns that make your ministry and life trying. Grace Place has taken over 4500 LCMS church workers through these "wholeness weeks" over the past 12 years, and here is a program created for you.

The 4-day, 4-night retreat will be held June 18-22, 2012, at the slope-side resort, The Stonebridge Inn, in Snowmass, Colorado, just minutes from Aspen. It is focused on discernment...what are my gifts, my talents, my passions in ministry, and how do I develop them fully and live them out abundantly as I live as a single individual. Whether you are a pastor or a teacher, you will find a wealth of guidance and wisdom shared among this retreat group, and all facilitated by John D. Eckrich, M.D., an Internist and Executive Director of Grace Place of St. Louis, and Dr. Mary Jacob, R.N., a certified spiritual guide, life coach, and counselor from Orlando, FL.

Stonebridge Inn is in the heart of the Colorado Rockies with readily accessible hiking, biking, horseback riding and river rafting just outside your door, as well as the arts and music opportunities, political, social media and outstanding fine food festivals all occurring while you’re in Aspen.

Thanks to magnificent underwriting from the Neeb Family Foundation of St. Louis, we are able to provide the lodging, food and program materials for $350 per person for the entire package.  Aspen is easily accessible just south of US Highway 70, four hours west of Denver, or you can fly directly into Aspen via Denver on either Frontier or United. Once you arrive in Aspen, there  is a complimentary shuttle to the resort. You are responsible for your own transportation, but you will not need a car once you arrive at the resort. You will be with wonderful, dedicated servants of Christ, and will undoubtedly make connections with your fellow retreatants for life.

Please visit our website for specifics at www.graceplaceretreats.org  or call

Patti Allen (Borghardt) at 314-842-3077.  Hope to see you in the Rockies!

LUTHERAN CHORALE EXPANDS ITS VISION

The workshop will be held on Saturday, February 11, 9 am to 4 pm.

St. Phillip Lutheran Church, 7531 S. Kendall Blvd. Littleton, CO  80128

The Lutheran Chorale is expanding its vision of community service.  According to Chorale president Linda Blandin, the organization’s primary goal since its inception in 1976 has been to provide opportunities for those who enjoy choral singing to perform the great classical and contemporary choral works of such composers as Mozart, Brahms, Haydn, Vivaldi, and Lauridsen, and also to offer this wonderful music to the Front Range community.  Now, under the its new director David Hodel, the Lutheran Chorale wishes also to be a resource for musical growth and enrichment to local church choirs.  While members have always brought back their Chorale experience and training to their individual churches, Hodel sees an opportunity to further support these choirs by offering workshops and performance experience to non-Chorale members as well.

This year, the Lutheran Chorale is hosting its second annual workshop for area choirs.  The following areas are being planned for this workshop:

-       healthy vocal production

-       sight reading tips

-       music selections for the church year

-       a choir’s role in worship

-       integrating liturgy using various musical styles

-       resources for praise bands

-       breakout session for organists

There is a nominal charge of $5 for supplies and a light lunch.   To register, contact either

-       Linda Blandin  (303) 973 -1161, or  lin-60@hotmail.com

-       Linda Thompson (303) 666-6642, or mailto:lthompson@msn.com

The workshop activities culminate with a concert featuring Chorale members and workshop attendees the following day (Sunday, February 11).  The concert will feature  Hymns Triumphant, Lee Holdridge’s  magnificent choral arrangement of well-known hymns, led by choir directors participating in the workshop.   A free-will offering will be taken at the concert.

All proceeds from the concert will benefit Bright Stars of Bethlehem, a ministry of the Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem—the funds will be used for a music room at the new Dar Al-Kalima College.   The Lutheran Chorale is delighted to offer its support to this worthy program.
